Birch and Basil Design is a boutique, Manhattan-based landscape design firm specializing in the urban domain of rooftop gardens, terraces, and backyards. We believe nature and landscapes provide life-changing benefits.

The principal, Kristin Monji, brings a California sensibility to East Coast gardens, having spent her formative years climbing trees and exploring orange groves in Southern California. Monji is a landscape designer and certified arborist from Orange County, California, and a graduate of the University of California, Irvine. Her partner, Cory, is a former mechanical engineer and graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. He wears many hats in the business, and also works as a photographer.

We are a family business so every project is handled with a personal touch. Our team utilizes its decade of experience to ensure each project is successful, from day one through installation. Designing and installing outdoor spaces that will be treasured and immensely enjoyed by our clients is simply what we love to do. While residential design is our specialty, we also cater to a growing roster of commercial clients, from hotels and hospitals to private membership clubs.

You might say we’re obsessed with quality. We hand select plants from top quality growers for our installations, build planters, pergolas, landscape elements, and bespoke structures out of stylish and long-lasting materials, and care for gardens with an all-organic approach. We provide all services from design through installation, overseeing every aspect of each project.

Birch and Basil collaborates with homeowners, architects, interior designers, contractors, and developers. We take pride in our creative horticultural artistry and in providing the highest level of service tailored to each garden and client.
