Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi Buy a Unique Montecito Home for $3.6 Million

The estate is composed of two buildings that were constructed in England during the mid-1700s and later shipped to California

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi’s latest real estate purchase in Montecito, California, is perhaps one of their most unique yet—which is saying something, given their stunning $27 million Balinese-inspired compound and the numerous other homes they’ve bought and sold over the years. Recently, the superstar couple reportedly dropped $3.607 million for a three-bedroom, two-and-a-half bathroom home in the beach town, and the residence is made up of two authentic English Tudor structures that date back to the mid-1700s and were originally built in Surrey, England.

The twin buildings were dismantled and shipped over to the States, where they were then reassembled on the 1.3-acre parcel with plenty of trees. The sections are linked via an orangery, a glass-enclosed space meant to house weather-sensitive plants and fruit trees. The outside of the home is decidedly traditional, with tall, leaded-glass windows, decorative dark-wood timbering, and a wood-shingled roof. Through the heavy wooden front door, however, the home features a more modern take on the architectural style, with brick and wide-plank hardwood floors and high ceilings. Both sides of the home have their own living room, each with a large fireplace. A set of French doors opens out from the larger of the two living rooms to a brick terrace.

Other rooms of note include the formal dining room, which features a medieval-style chandelier, and the light-filled kitchen, which showcases textured, hand-painted tile countertops and surprisingly modern appliances. A breakfast room just off the kitchen features its own stone fireplace and ample leaded windows that offer up views of the greenery outside. The bedrooms all share the same wood-beamed, high-ceilinged aesthetic, while the master bedroom features abundant room for a separate sitting area and access to a private balcony through a set of French doors. The master bathroom is uniquely outfitted with wooden paneling, wood coffered ceilings, and bright jade-colored tile flooring. According to Variety, listing details also make mention of a workshop, a gym space, a full basement, and a three-car garage with its own restroom. The lush shaded gardens on the property were designed by landscape architect Tom Nielsen and include a number of mature trees and wildflowers.

Just last year, DeGeneres and De Rossi purchased two other properties in the area to add to their collection: a $1.4 million two-bedroom, two-bathroom condo situated in Montecito’s Upper Village, and a $1.9 million fixer-upper next door to their $27 million compound. The couple also owns homes in Beverly Hills and elsewhere in Montecito.
