Mitate Hanaya, Kyoto

“Kyoto is an endless resource for contemporary takes on traditional arts. A recent discovery for me was Mitate Hanaya, established in 2013. He then reinterprets them in deliberately surprising arrangements as an original way of speaking to a season or occasion. There is a sincere return to authenticity here that is steeped in tradition while remaining refreshing: a hallmark of contemporary Kyoto.” —Takashi Yanai, Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects
